Briefs: Day tops field indoors

Sharon Day, a Costa Mesa High product, won the pentathlon at the USA Track & Field Indoor Combined Evens Championships on Sunday at Indiana University.

Day, a 2008 Olympian aiming to compete in the heptathlon and possibly the high jump at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, posted 4,567 points, including a personal-record time of two minutes, 11.89 seconds in the 800 meters.

Day also had a personal-best in the 60 hurdles (8.46 seconds) and cleared 6 feet, 3/4 inches in the high jump.

MESA’S JOHNSTON RESIGNS

Dan Johnston has stepped down after his 20th season as the Costa Mesa High girls’ soccer coach, Jim Kiefer, the boys’ athletic director, announced on Monday.

Johnston cited health reasons for his decision to resign. He led the Mustangs to seven league titles, one CIF Southern Section Division III title in 2003, and a 216-148-81 overall record.

Costa Mesa missed the playoffs for the third straight season after finishing in fourth place in the Orange Coast League. The Mustangs finished 6-8-8, 4-3-3 in league.

MMA SERIES SET

Fight Club OC will launch a mixed martial arts Saturday series at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa on April 14, Newport Beach-based promoter Roy Englebrecht announced Monday.

The event is the first of three MMA-only cards scheduled inside a cage at the Hangar.

The opener has four scheduled fights, highlighted by Tyson Jeffries (6-1) taking on Keith Berry (9-2) and Hacienda Heights’ Aaron Miller (12-7) against Fresno’s Art Arciniega (10-4) in a featherweight match.

Other fights include Joe Murphy (5-0), who trains out of OTM in Huntington Beach, against Tommy Vargas (9-2) of San Bernardino.

Lake Forest’s Josh Smith (6-5) fights Fullerton’s Emilio Chavez (3-2).
