Locals nominated for OC All-Star Football Game

Corona del Mar High quarterback Cayman Carter, Newport Harbor tailback Talalelei Teaupa and Estancia running back Robert Murtha highlight three of 17 seniors from Newport-Mesa Unified School District schools nominated to play in the 54th Brea Lions Club Orange County North-South Prep All-Star Football Game at Orange Coast College on June 28.

If selected in the coming weeks, the Newport-Mesa players will be members of the South All-Stars.

Carter, who plans to walk on at Southern Methodist University, is one of four players nominated from a CdM team that defended its CIF Southern Section Southern Division championship in December. The rest of the Sea Kings are kicker Griff Amies, defensive end Tim Reinhardt and wide receiver Troy Reese.

The Sailors have five players nominated, Teaupa, Landon Gyulay, a receiver and cornerback, lineman Zach Cornwell, linebacker Marty Taylor and Derek Kula, a linebacker and safety.

Along with Murtha, Estancia’s DeionTe Haywood, a fullback and linebacker, and Levi Stillman, a defensive back and receiver, have been nominated.

Costa Mesa has five players nominated, starting with Anthony McCormick, a tight end and defensive end, Noah JeyaRajah, a quarterback and defensive back, lineman Oscar Reyes, defensive lineman Jose Villalpondo and defensive back Kurt Williams.

Carter led CdM (12-2, 5-0 in Pacific Coast League) to its first undefeated league championship in the program’s history.

He passed for 2,210 yards and 17 touchdowns, with only six interceptions, and rushed for 1,073 yards and 15 touchdowns. He completed 167 of 290 passes, setting a CdM single-season completion record.

Carter also was the Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Dream Team Player of the Year, the All-Pacific Coast League MVP and the All-CIF Southern Section Southern Section Offensive Player of the Year.

Amies converted 22 of 30 field-goal attempts, tying the state single-season record for field goals made. His longest successful field goal was a 52-yarder.

Amies, who converted 45 extra-point kicks and recorded 26 touchdowns, garnered first-team MaxPreps All-American, All-CIF, first-team All-Orange County (Orange County Register) and Newport-Mesa Dream Team honors, and the All-Pacific Coast League Kicker of the Year award.

Tim Reinhardt, a two-time All-CIF and Newport-Mesa Dream Team selection, finished with nine sacks, 47 tackles, one safety and one forced fumble. He earned second-team All-Orange County and first-team All-Pacific Coast League honors.

Reese, a Newport-Mesa Dream Team and first-team All-Pacific Coast League pick, led the area with 55 receptions for 803 yards. He caught nine touchdowns passes.

Teaupa, the Newport-Mesa Dream Team Offensive Player of the Year and All-Sunset League Offensive Player of the Year, led Newport Harbor to its best record (4-1) in Sunset League play in 35 years and the quarterfinals of the Southwest Division playoffs, the program’s first quarterfinal appearance in seven years.

Teaupa rushed for an area-best 1,662 yards, to go with 11 touchdowns. His single-season yards ranks eighth in Newport Harbor’s history.

Teaupa produced four 200-yard games on the ground, including a 272-yard effort in the Sailors’ 42-21 win against Troy in the first round of the playoffs. The mark is the eighth-best single-game rushing performance in the Sailors’ history.

Teaupa earned All-CIF Southern Section Southwest Division and third-team All-Orange County accolades.

Gyulay, a two-time Newport-Mesa Dream Team and first-team All-Sunset League selection, caught 38 passes for 524 yards and four touchdowns as a receiver.

As a cornerback, he finished with 34 tackles, one interception and one sack.

Cornwell earned third-team All-Orange County, Newport-Mesa Dream Team and first-team All-Sunset League honors.

Taylor totaled 120 tackles, one for a loss, and intercepted one pass. He earned first-team All-Sunset League and Newport-Mesa Dream Team laurels.

Kula finished with 99 tackles, two for losses, one sack, six hurries and one forced fumble. Kula was a Newport-Mesa Dream Team and first-team All-Sunset League selection.

Murtha, a three-time All-CIF Southern Section Southern Division and Newport-Mesa Dream Team selection, rushed for 1,594 yards and 15 touchdowns.

He led Estancia (7-4, 4-1 in Orange Coast League) to the Southern Division playoffs for the fourth straight year.

Murtha finished as the Newport-Mesa career leader for yards rushing (5,489) and touchdowns (58).

Murtha received the All-Orange Coast League Offensive Player of the Year award for the third straight season.

Haywood, a Newport-Mesa Dream Team and first-team All-Orange Coast League member, finished with 75 tackles, one sack, one interception, three fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.

Stillman, a repeat first-team Orange Coast League selection, intercepted six passes, made 24 tackles and recovered one fumble.

McCormick, a first-team All-Orange Coast League pick for Costa Mesa, recorded 46 tackles (eight for losses), 5 1/2 sacks and seven hurries.

JeyaRajah completed 47-of-84 passes for 740 yards and 11 touchdowns, with five interceptions. He rushed 31 times for 284 yards and one touchdown.

On defense, JeyaRajah finished with 48 tackles (five for losses), two interceptions, one sack and two caused fumbles.
