College Roundup: Vanguard baseball wins twice in NAIA Opening Round

NAIA Opening Round

SANTA CLARITA — Vanguard University, the No. 5 seed in the five-team Santa Clarita Bracket, won twice on Tuesday to advance to Wednesday action at The Master’s College.

The Lions topped Cal State San Marcos, 4-2, in the opener, then surprised No. 1-seeded The Master’s, 8-7, to move on.

Against TMC (42-14), Vanguard overcame deficits of 4-0 and 7-4. It rallied to tie it at 4-4, then, after TMC scored three in the top of the ninth inning, Vanguard scored four in the bottom of the frame to win in walk-off fashion.

Against TMC, Brett Collins was four for five with two runs batted in, while Jose Rojas was two for four with two RBIs and two runs.

David Stone was two for five with one RBI and one run and Taylor McKnight drove in two runs for the Lions (36-20).

Michael Ostrea got the final out in the ninth to collect the victory for VU.

Against Cal State San Marcos, Rojas was two for three with a home run, two RBIs and three runs.

Stone was two for four with a solo homer and Paul Keating was two for five with one RBI.

Sean Isaac allowed three earned runs on six hits and struck out eight in 7 1/3 innings to get the win and improve to 9-5.

Marshall McKinnon earned his fifth save.

Vanguard meets the University of British Columbia on Wednesday at noon. If the Lions win, they advance to Thursday’s 3 p.m. game. Should British Columbia win, Vanguard would play in an elimination game Thursday at noon.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

NCAA championship

STANFORD — UC Irvine rebounded from a quarterfinal loss on Friday to win two matches and finish fifth at Stanford University’s Avery Aquatic Complex.

UCI, the No. 5 seed, defeated Princeton, 6-5, on Sunday in the fifth-place final, after topping UC San Diego, 13-8, on Saturday in a fifth-place semifinal.

Freshman Mary Brooks scoured four goals, including the game-winner with 3:45 left to pace the win over Princeton.

Senior Danielle Warde added the other two goals for UCI, for which senior Jillian Yocum made six saves.

UCI finished the season 21-9.

Warde had five goals and Brooks chipped in three in the win over UCSD, during which Yocum made 10 saves.

It was the third top-five finish for UCI, which has made four NCAA Championship appearances in the last five seasons.

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 6, Cal Poly SLO 5

Junior shortstop Mikey Duarte was two for three with three runs batted in and one run and freshman Keston Hiura was two for four with two RBIs to pace the host Anteaters in the finale of the Big West Conference series on Sunday.

UCI (31-17, 13-5 in conference), won the series and moved into a tie for first place with Cal State Fullerton, one game ahead of third-place UC Santa Barbara.

UCI visits No. 12-ranked UCSB for a three-game series beginning Friday.

Senior Evan Manarino earned the win Sunday, allowing two earned runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. Senior Sam Moore pitched two scoreless innings to record his fifth save.

ROWING

Newport Regatta

Orange Coast College crew won four of eight races on Saturday in Newport Harbor to claim the P.A. Palmer Team Trophy.

OCC won the second varsity eight, the novice eight and the second novice eight events. The Pirates also prevailed in the lightweight novice four event.

UC Irvine won the varsity eight, completing the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes, 12 seconds.

OCC was fourth in the varsity eight in 6:19.8.
