Briefs: Locals competing in U.S. meet

Three UC Irvine student-athletes and Newport Harbor High product Steve Michaelsen are in Des Moines, Iowa, this week for the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Olympic heptathlete Sharon Day, a former Costa Mesa High standout, is competing at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the same venue, Drake Stadium.

Competing for the Anteaters are Megan Benson (100-meter hurdles), Kaulyn Lee-McNeill (400 hurdles) and Itos Aikhionbare (shotput and discus throw).

Benson opens competition in the 100 hurdles Thursday at 9:30 a.m. PDT. As a freshman at UCI in 2013, she had a top time of 13.86 that ranks third all-time in the Anteater record book.

The shotput competition for Aikhionbare begins at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. She ranks No. 2 in UCI history with a mark of 51-5.

Lee-McNeill competes at 1 p.m. Friday. Her top time as a freshman this season was 1 minute, 1.33 seconds.

Aikhionbare, who recently completed her sophomore season, competes in the discus Saturday at 10:45 a.m. She owns the school record of 169 feet, 5 inches.

Michaelsen competes in the discus on Thursday in the Junior Championships at 12:15 p.m.

Day will be in the 100 meters Thursday at 11:35 a.m.

The top four finishers in each junior event will represent the USA at the Pan Am Junior Championships in Medellin, Colombia, Aug. 23-25.

U.S. takes fourth

The U.S. men’s water polo team, which included Corona del Mar High product John Mann and three former UC Irvine standouts, finished fourth at the FINA World League Super Final Sunday in Russia.

The Americans lost to Montenegro, 13-11, in a shootout in the third-place game.

Former Anteaters Tim Hutten, Brandon Johnson and Greg Enloe were also on the U.S. team.

Hutten, Mann and Enloe scored one goal each against Montenegro.

Joyce to Chapman

Corona del Mar High and Orange Coast College product John Joyce will play basketball at Chapman College next season, OCC Coach Steve Spencer said.

Joyce, a 6-foot-8 power forward averaged just fewer than four points and two rebounds a game in 24 contests as a sophomore for the Pirates in 2012-13. He started and came off the bench.

One of his top games last year came against East Los Angeles, against which he produced 12 points on five-of-six field-goal shooting. He also grabbed for rebounds.

Prior to coming to Coast, Joyce attended Vanguard University and Irvine Valley College. As a prep standout for the Sea Kings, Joyce competed in basketball, volleyball and football.
