MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 79, Sacramento State 53

SACRAMENTO — Senior guard Chris McNealy had 15 points, six rebounds and three assists to lead the visiting Anteaters in the nonconference game Saturday.

UCI trailed by 10 last in the first half, but outscored the Hornets, 57-21, from there on, and shot 68% from the field in the second half to improve to 5-3.

Freshman Luke Nelson had 14 points, while sophomore Alex Young had 12 points, and a team-best six assists.

Will Davis had nine rebounds and seven points, while sophomore Dominique Dunning had eight points and six rebounds in 18 reserve minutes.

Mamadou Ndiaye, a 7-foot-6 freshman center who led the nation in total blocks coming into the week, had eight points, five rebounds, three blocks and two assists for the winners.

The Hornets (2-3) were outscored in the paint, 38-8.

UCI visits Cal on Monday at 7 p.m.

Vanguard 94, La Sierra 76

Junior guard Chris Gorman led the host Lions with 19 points in the nonconference game on Saturday.

Keith Mason had 16 points and a team-best seven rebounds, while Preston Wynne and DeAngelo Jones had 11 points apiece for the winners (7-2).

Gorman was six for nine from the field, and five for six from the foul line in 24 minutes.

La Sierra is 2-7.

San Diego City 66, Orange Coast 52

GLENDORA — Spencer Poston had six points, five steals and four assists to pace the Pirates in the consolation game of the Citrus tournament on Saturday.

OCC (1-5) had 17 steals to help force 28 turnovers, but committed 20 of its own and shot just 17% from the field (17 for 63).

San Diego City improved to 4-4.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

North Dakota State 64, UC Irvine 61

LOS ANGELES — A three-pointer with 2.9 seconds left was the difference in the championship game of the LMU Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday at Loyola Marymount University.

Senior Camille Buckley led UCI (4-3) with 15 points and six rebounds, while seniors Kelly Meggs and Jennifer Tsurumoto had 14 points apiece. Meggs grabbed a career-high seven rebounds to go with her season-best scoring output. Meggs, who was five for nine from the field, including four of six from three-point range, tied the score with a three-pointer with 13.8 seconds left.

Buckley and Tsurumoto were named to the all-tournament team.

UCI returns to action in the Montana Tournament beginning Friday against Appalachian State.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Cal 16, UC Irvine 8

STOCKTON — Senior Mitch Wise and sophomore Tyler Mancuso had two goals each for the Anteaters in the fifth-place semifinal of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at the University of the Pacific on Saturday.

UCI (13-14) will meet UC Santa Barbara in the seventh-place game on Sunday at 10 a.m.
