Reid, Eagles back in winning form
The following are odds and ends from the local sports scene.
REID, EAGLES NOTCH VICTORY
For the first time in a month, Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy Reid didn’t have to address questions following a Philadelphia loss. Reid, a former Glendale Community College football player, saw Philadelphia end its four-game losing streak Sunday with a 20-13 road win against the division-rival Washington Redskins.
The Eagles (2-4) received a big effort from running back LeSean McCoy, who rushed for 126 yards in 28 carries and one touchdown. Philadelphia safety Kurt Coleman finished with three interceptions for the Eagles, who will have their bye week before beginning a three-game homestand Oct. 30 against the Dallas Cowboys.
“In the National Football League, they are all must-wins,” Reid said in his postgame news conference. “I can’t sit here and say we’re going to win this one and not this one. We prepare for every game and do the best we can every game.
“This is a tough place to play. They came in with the right attitude and battled like crazy. Now they have a week to rest and get themselves ready for the Cowboys.”
The Eagles are in last place in the National Football Conference’s East Division, which they won last season.
WIN, LOSS FOR RAIDERS’ JACKSON
The Oakland Raiders, coached by former Glendale Community College quarterback Hue Jackson, won their second straight game Sunday with a 24-17 victory against the visiting Cleveland Browns. However, the win proved costly, as the Raiders lost starting quarterback Jason Campbell for likely the remainder of the season because of a broken collarbone he suffered in the first half after landing hard on his shoulder during a scramble.
On Monday, Campbell said he’ll undergo surgery soon and hopes to be back in the lineup in six to eight weeks.
Campbell was replaced by Kyle Boller. The only other quarterback on Oakland’s roster is rookie Terrelle Pryor. Reports surfaced that the Raiders, who have won two games in a row, might be interested in acquiring quarterback Kyle Orton from the division-rival Denver Broncos.
With Campbell out, Oakland special teams provided the difference during Oakland’s first home game since the death of owner Al Davis on Oct. 8. The Raiders improved to 4-2.
Tight end Kevin Boss grabbed a 35-yard touchdown pass from punter Shane Lechler on a fake field goal attempt in the third quarter to give Oakland a 24-7 lead.
“We’ll do whatever it takes to win football games,” Jackson told the Associated Press. “Every week there’s going to be something there to give us a chance to win a game.”
“A year ago, we didn’t find a way to win these kinds of games. Two years ago, we didn’t find a way to win these kinds of game. The team is now believing in each other and fighting like he always thought it could. And they’re winning football games.”
Oakland will next face the Kansas City Chiefs at home at 1 p.m. Sunday before having a bye week Oct. 30. The Raiders are in second place in the American Football Conference’s West Division.
ESTRADA’S SEASON COMES TO AN END
The Milwaukee Brewers saw their stellar season came to a close Sunday with a 12-6 home loss to the St. Louis Cardinals in the sixth game of the National League Championship Series. Relief pitcher Marco Estrada, a former Glendale Community College player, made two appearances in the series.
The right-hander pitched three innings, allowing four hits and four runs. He struck out four and walked two and finished with a 12.00 earned-run average.
Estrada, who helped Milwaukee win the National League Central Division championship, went 4-8 with a 4.08 ERA in 43 regular-season appearances. In 124 innings, he struck out 88 and walked 29.
St. Louis will face the Texas Rangers in the World Series, beginning Wednesday in St. Louis.
LOCAL TEAMS KEEP CIF RANKINGS
Seven area high school teams remained ranked by CIF after the CIF Southern Section office unveiled its latest polls Monday. All remain in the same spots they occupied last week.
St. Francis’ football team remains ranked third in the Western Division. The Golden Knights (6-0) will meet host Gardena Serra, ranked fourth in the division, in a Mission League game at 7 p.m. Friday.
In boys’ cross-country, Flintridge Prep is ranked No. 3 in Division V. In girls’ cross-country, Crescenta Valley is No. 6 in Division I, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy is No. 5 in Division IV and Flintridge Prep holds the sixth spot in Division V.
The Glendale and Hoover boys’ water polo teams are ranked seventh and ninth, respectively, in Division V.
LOCAL AYSO PARTICIPATION SKYROCKETS
Region 88 of the American Youth Soccer Organization, serving Glendale and La Crescenta, registered a record 3,745 players for the 2011 soccer season this fall, according to Region 88 officials. Officials said 329 teams play on Saturdays and Sundays at parks and schools across Glendale.
Commissioner Aldo Mascheroni said in a press release that there was growth among a number of both boys’ and girls’ teams.
Although officials estimate that more than 70% of the athletes are from Glendale and La Crescenta, the program’s success, along with its open-registration policy, attracts players from the surrounding communities of La Cañada Flintridge, Burbank, Sunland, Eagle Rock and Atwater Village.
QUARTERBACK CLUB SET TO MEET
The Glendale YMCA Quarterback Club will hold its sixth meeting of the year at 11:30 a.m. today at The Elk’s Lodge, 120 E. Colorado St., Glendale.
The club, which is in its 69th year, is geared to support the Crescenta Valley, Glendale, Hoover, St. Francis and Village Christian high football teams and the Glendale Community College football program.
Former UCLA quarterback Cory Paus will be the guest speaker at today’s meeting.
