Update: The coaches have a shared history. UCLA’s Steve Alford and Long Beach State’s Dan Monson coached rival Big Ten programs from 1999-2007, Alford at Iowa and Monson at Minnesota. Alford’s Hawkeyes went 9-5 against Monson’s Gophers. Now, the Bruins (5-3) will take on the 49ers three days after UCLA’s biggest win this season, over No. 1 Kentucky. Nick Faust, a transfer from Maryland, leads Long Beach State (5-4) with 16.3 points per game.
