UCLA baseball: Bruins lose to top-ranked Vanderbilt

The showdown between two of the top teams in college baseball got off to a bad start for UCLA.

Carson Fulmer threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings as top-ranked Vanderbilt eased past the sixth-ranked Bruins, 6-0, Friday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Fulmer (3-0) struck out nine and allowed only three hits. It was the first home loss of the year for UCLA (11-2).

The Commodores (11-2) took an early lead with a two-run first inning. Dansby Swanson’s single drove in the first run and the second scored on an error by second baseman Trent Chatterton.

UCLA loaded the bases with two outs in the second, but Kevin Kramer struck out to end the threat.

Rhett Wiseman had a bases-empty home run and Karl Ellison three hits and an RBI for Vanderbilt.

James Kaprielian (3-1) suffered his first loss, allowing three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.

UCLA plays No. 7 TCU tonight at 6 at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
