Fans traveling to see UCLA take on Texas at AT&T Stadium on Saturday saw a go-ahead touchdown pass from backup quarterback Jerry Neuheisel and a big win to help the Bruins stay undefeated.

And because it was in the House that Jerry built, one of the most extravagant stadiums in American sports, the atmosphere surrounding the game was almost as impressive as the outcome itself.

Long Beach resident Whitney Latimer said that he was the only Bruin at a Texas tailgate, but that he was overwhelmed with how welcoming everyone was. He also said that the stadium was the best sporting venue he’s ever seen, which only helped the friendly atmosphere.

A Bruin fan from the other side of the country, Sergio Melgar from Massachusetts, attended a tailgate put on by the alumni association called Bruin Bash. He’s been to lots of road games over the years, including the game in Virginia two weeks ago, and said that the Longhorn fan base was among the most friendly he’s ever watched a game with.

Multiple fans mentioned the famous video board, which can seem bigger than the field itself depending on the angle. That, along with the band, gave the stadium a bowl-like atmosphere.

Not all fans had a similar experience, though. Mike Bornman said that it got a bit ugly in the stands toward the end of the game, as people were pushing each other and starting fights. Unlike the Pac-12, which doesn’t allow for schools to sell alcohol in the stadium, beer was served until the end of the game according to Bornman. In an email, he said, “it did not promote a friendly, family atmosphere.”

But for the most part, the trip seemed worth it for the fans who made the trek, especially considering the outcome.

Melgar said he and his wife had such a good experience that a part of them wished the Longhorns would join the Pac-12, so they would have an excuse to make a trip to the Lone Star State more often.
