USC players rewarded before practice

Share

Ed Orgeron happily rocked the world of USC players when he returned desserts to the training table after taking over as the Trojans’ interim coach.

On Monday, Orgeron again played the food card.

During USC’s team meeting, he treated the Trojans to burgers and shakes from In-N-Out Burger.

“Just want to thank you as a coaching staff,” Orgeron said to feasting players in a video that was posted on USC’s website.

It might have been coincidence or, perhaps, an ode to Oregon State Coach Mike Riley, who took his team to In-N-Out after the Beavers defeated UCLA last season.

Regardless, the reward seemed to energize the Trojans during their first practice since Friday’s 31-14 victory over Oregon State at Corvallis, Ore.

The victory improved USC’s record to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-12 Conference. The Trojans are 3-1 under Orgeron, with four games remaining in the regular season.

Several players appeared to be working through soreness — or perhaps full stomachs — but the Trojans were otherwise highly energetic during a one-hour workout that began preparations for Saturday’s game at California.

Offensive tackle Kevin Graf, who sat out against Oregon State because of an ankle injury, and safety Su’a Cravens, who was sidelined because of a groin injury, went through stretching and participated in limited drills.

Coaches and players are not made available to the media after practices on Mondays during regular game weeks.

Shaw honored

Cornerback Josh Shaw intercepted a pass and made a team-best eight tackles against Oregon State.

The junior was selected Monday as the Pac-12 defensive player of the week.

USC defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast moved Shaw from safety to cornerback before USC’s game against Utah on Oct. 26, and Shaw responded by intercepting a pass in the Trojans’ 19-3 victory. USC finished the game with three interceptions.

Shaw intercepted a pass in the end zone against Oregon State, the first of three interceptions in the game by the Trojans.

On Saturday, Shaw and fellow cornerback Kevon Seymour will match up against several former Southland high school receivers.

Cal freshman Kenny Lawler, who played at Upland High, caught three touchdown passes last week in the Golden Bears’ 33-28 loss to Arizona, a defeat that dropped Cal to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in the Pac-12 under first-year Coach Sonny Dykes.

Sophomore Chris Harper, a former standout at Encino Crespi, has 62 receptions, five for touchdowns. Sophomore Bryce Treggs, who played at Bellflower St. John Bosco, has 61 catches, one for a touchdown.

Quick hits

Cal has not defeated the Trojans since winning, 34-31, in triple overtime in 2003…. The kickoff time for USC’s Nov. 16 game against Stanford at the Coliseum will be announced by next Monday, the Pac-12 announced. The game could be broadcast by ABC at 5 p.m., or at 12:30 p.m. on Fox or 1 p.m. on Fox Sports 1.
