USC Coach Steve Sarkisian said he wanted more production from the defensive line.

Junior defensive tackle Claude Pelon heard the message.

“We challenged ourselves in the defensive line room to step it up a bit more,” said Pelon, who recorded his first sack and blocked a field goal on consecutive plays in USC’s victory at Arizona last week.

Pelon, a transfer from Mesa (Ariz.) Community College, said it took a few games to understand USC’s schemes and his role.

“I just have to go out there and execute,” he said.

On Saturday against Colorado, Pelon will try to build on last week’s performance. The Buffaloes have not won a conference game.

“We never underestimate a team we play,” Pelon said. “We play a faceless opponent and go out there and do what we have to do.”
