N.W.A wasn’t blasting from the speakers during practice Friday at Brian Kennedy-Howard Jones field, but USC Coach Steve Sarkisian and several players said they enjoyed a trip to the movies Thursday to see “Straight Outta Compton.”

“I don’t know if I can say it,” Sarkisian said when asked what his favorite song was from the Dr. Dre-co-produced film, which chronicles the Compton hip-hop group N.W.A.

Though the song lyrics aren’t quite clean enough to play at practice — or to mention to reporters — players said they turned N.W.A up on their stereos on the way back to campus and continued to play the group’s music through afternoon meetings.

“To me, it is a heart-touching movie because just seeing things like that from my city makes me want to be successful,” said receiver Darreus Rogers, who grew up in Compton.

“People don’t expect people from Compton to do big things. It’s not where you come from. It’s how you carry yourself.”

Said receiver Steven Mitchell Jr.: “We all dialed into the movie and we took a lot from it.”
