Former USC defensive lineman Leonard Williams begins camp with N.Y. Jets
Former Trojan Leonard Williams starts his first training camp with the New York Jets this week.
Former USC All-American Leonard Williams will have a chance to compete for a starting role when the New York Jets start training camp on Thursday at the team’s training facility in Florham Park, N.J.
“Reporting for camp tomorrow and couldn’t be more excited about getting back to work! It’s been a good break but play time is over! #jetup #GangGreen,” Williams posted on Instagram on Tuesday.
The Jets selected the former Trojans defensive lineman with the sixth pick of the NFL draft in May.
Williams joins a veteran line that is considered one of the best in the NFL; however, returning starter Sheldon Richardson will serve a four-game marijuana suspension to start the season, which could open a spot for Williams.
The Jets also return key linemen Muhammad Wilkerson, Damon Harrison, Leger Douzable, Kevin Vickerson and Jason Babin.
Williams, who left USC with a season of eligibility remaining, made 9 1/2 tackles for losses, including seven sacks, intercepted a pass and forced three fumbles during the Trojans’ 2014 season.
The Jets open the season against the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 13 at MetLife Stadium.
