Former Trojan Matt Barkley set to start Eagles’ final preseason game
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Matt Barkley looks to pass during a preseason game this month against the New England Patriots.
The battle between two former USC quarterbacks to win the Philadelphia Eagles’ backup job appears to be over.
Advantage Mark Sanchez?
If that’s the case, Matt Barkley has one more chance to make an impression. Eagles Coach Chip Kelly announced that Barkley will start Thursday’s preseason finale against the New York Jets. Starter Nick Foles and Sanchez will have the night off.
Barkley, a fourth-round pick in the 2013 draft, will start for the first time since Nov. 17, 2012, when he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury against UCLA. “I’m really excited about this opportunity,” Barkley told Comcast Sportsnet.
In three preseason appearances, Barkley has completed 20 of 32 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns, with two interceptions.
Sanchez has completed 25 of 31 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception.
