With Cody Kessler scheduled to complete his final year of eligibility, USC will feature a new starting quarterback for the 2016 opener against Alabama at the Cowboys Classic in Texas.

Third-year sophomore Max Browne said he has thought about the competition, which could include Jalen Greene, Ricky Town and Sam Darnold, but he remains focused on the upcoming season.

“You never know when your opportunity is going to come and you just got to stay ready,” he said. Browne will back up Kessler for a second season.

Despite what could be three seasons of limited playing time, Browne remains motivated.

“You are one play away,” he said.

Browne was among USC’s most improved players this spring. He completed 24 of 37 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns in the spring scrimmage.
