Baseball: Southwestern League rivals to meet in final of Boras Classic

The Inland Empire and the Southwestern League, in particular, is demonstrating its strength in the Boras Classic, with league rivals Vista Murrieta and Temecula Valley advancing to Saturday’s 6 p.m. championship game at Mater Dei.

Jack Moberg, Brandon Nelson and J.T. McLellen combined on an eight-hitter for Vista Murrieta (10-3) in a 4-1 victory over Glendora. Temecula Valley (11-1) knocked off Mater Dei, 4-1, behind the strong pitching of Burke Mitchell.

In consolation games of the Boras Classic, Valencia defeated Chino Hills, 7-4. Chad Bible and Hunter Holland each hit home runs and finished with three RBIs. Jake Pries, Brady Shockey and Parker Joe Robinson each had two hits in JSerra’s 9-7 win over San Dimas. Elias Orona had a home run for San Dimas.

In South Carolina, South Hills won the Mingo Bay tournament with a 9-0 win over Myrtle Beach. South Hills is 12-1-1. First baseman Frank Ramirez was named tournament MVP. He had three doubles in two games on Thursday.

Rancho Cucamonga defeated Los Osos, 7-1. Jordan Dynes had a home run and Joseph Hamilton had two hits and two RBIs.

St. John Bosco picked up a 5-4 win over Long Beach Wilson. Alec Rodriguez and Gavin Windes each had two hits for the Braves. Jackson Foss had a home run for Wilson.

In the Moore League, Long Beach Poly defeated Lakewood, 2-1. Tai Tiedemann broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI single.

Angel Lerma of Marshall allowed one hit and struck out eight in a 3-0 victory over Birmingham. He has an 0.37 ERA and allowed just 13 hits in 38 innings this season.

Matt Nash had four hits in Granada Hills’ 5-4 win over Poly. John Schultz allowed two unearned runs in six innings. He’s allowed one earned run in 36 innings this season.

In the Valley Mission League, Kennedy (10-3, 3-1) defeated Van Nuys, 4-0. Noah Valenzuela struck out five and walked none. Estevan Rodriguez had three RBIs. Sylmar defeated Panorama, 26-0, in five innings. Jake Arevalo, Danny Cervacio and Alex Gutierrez had four RBIs each. Sylmar has a two-game showdown with San Fernando next week.
