Baseball: Freshman Hagen Danner can hit, too

Freshman Hagen Danner of Huntington Beach has been used primarily as a relief pitcher this season, but on Monday, he got a chance to hit and came through with two singles to help the Oilers defeat Elsinore, 6-1.

Ryan Abady threw five shutout innings, allowing three hits while striking out three and walking none. Huntington Beach, ranked No. 3 by The Times, is 12-2.

It was high drama in a Mission League showdown at O’Malley Family Field, where Harvard-Westlake and Loyola finished in a 3-3 tie after the game was called in the 11th inning because of darkness.

Stephen Dubb hit a two-run home run off Jack Flaherty to give Loyola a 2-0 lead. Nathan Hadley shut out the Wolverines for six innings, but Harvard-Westlake tied the game at 2-2 in the seventh on a two-strike, two-out triple by Flaherty.

Dubb’s RBI single in the top of the 10th inning broke a 2-2 tie and gave Loyola a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the 10th, the Wolverines got three straight hits on two-strike, two-out pitches to tie the game at 3-3. Loyola went ahead, 4-3, in the 11th, but the game couldn’t be completed. The two teams play again on Thursday at Loyola.

In the National Classic, Santa Margarita defeated Spanish Fork, 7-4. Nick Wallace, JJ Carr and Dillon Miyashiro each had two hits. Esperanza was beaten in eight innings by Rocklin, 5-4. Alemany lost to IMG Academy, 5-4. Ryan Karstetter hit a three-run home run for IMG. Alex Mckenna went three for three for Alemany.

El Camino Real defeated Helix, 3-2. Brian Oleesky got the win and Jordan Berg picked up the save. Deion Fernando had a home run. Heritage defeated San Diego Hoover, 11-1, behind Benji Foyle, who threw a complete game, allowing five hits while striking out three.

Chatsworth defeated Desert Oasis, 2-1. John Cashman threw six shutout innings.

Granada Hills lost to West Hills, 5-3. Austin Dudley had three hits in defeat. Westlake defeated Templeton, 9-1. Luke Dykstra had three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs. Taft lost to Christian, 10-0.

James Allen had two doubles and three RBIs as Cypress defeated Lakewood, 19-8.

Sierra Canyon defeated Brentwood, 11-3. Jake Fried was three for five with a home run, triple and six RBIs. Sierra Canyon is 14-4.

Granada Hills Kennedy was beaten by Mira Mesa, 3-0. Beckman defeated Anaheim Canyon, 7-3. Tyler Geurts and Michael Fuchs each had three hits. North Hollywood lost to Olympia, 6-5. Alan Ruiz had two hits for the Huskies.

Warren defeated Valley Center, 6-0. Julian Perez, Joaquin Castillo, Steven Nuno and Chuckie Castaneda all had two hits.

Carson won two games in the Rancho Cordova tournament, defeating Center, 21-2, and Placer, 7-2. Isaiah Flower had two doubles and two RBIs in the first game. Adrian Padilla went three for four in the second game.

Birmingham was beaten by Santa Fe Christian, 2-1. Cleveland lost to Horizon Christian, 11-0.

California defeated Pioneer, 11-1. Daniel Alvarez struck out 10 in six shutout innings.
