Baseball: J.T. McLellen comes through for Vista Murrieta

The Southwestern League has turned out to be one of the toughest in Southern California this season, with each victory an immense struggle. So it was no exception on Tuesday, where Vista Murrieta and pitcher J.T. McLellen came through with a 2-0 victory over No. 2-ranked Temecula Valley.

McLellan struck out one, walked one and gave up five hits to help Vista Murrieta (13-4, 3-3) come up with a critical league victory over a very strong Temecula Valley (13-4, 4-2) team.

Ian Nowak had a single and double and Angel Ortiz also had two hits.

In another Southwestern League upset, Murrieta Valley defeated Great Oak, 6-3. Cody Martin and James Schmidt each had two hits.

In the National Classic, Huntington Beach rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Santa Margarita, 2-1. Jake Bodt had the game-winning two-run double. JJ Carr had given Santa Margarita a 1-0 lead with a home run through six innings. Daniel Miyashiro had shut out the Oilers.

Alemany defeated Arizona Sunsrise Mountain, 5-3. Brandon Ponticelli (6-0) struck out 11 in 5 2/3 innings. Ruben Cardenas and Terrell Tate each had two hits. Esperanza defeated Bingham, 7-3. Tristan Hildebrandt had a two-run home run. Rocklin defeated Fountain Valley, 4-3.

Wednesday’s championship semifinals are Huntington Beach vs. IMG Academy at 7 p.m. at Cal State Fullerton and Valley Christian vs. Rocklin at 4 p.m. at Fullerton.

In the Baseline League, Los Osos was beaten by Alta Loma, 8-6. Glendora improved to 5-0 with a 5-4 victory over Upland. Kale Morton (6-0) threw 5 1/3 innings. Jake Nelson got the save. Griffen Herrera had three hits and Nick Kaye hit a home run.

In the Marmonte League, Simi Valley hung on for a 5-4 win over Calabasas. Taylor Campos escaped a bases loaded jam in the seventh. Cal Hodgins had three hits for the Pioneers, who scored two runs in the seventh. Tristan Friedl had a home run. Charlie Fischer had three hits for Calabasas.

In the Channel League, left-hander Josh Tedeschi outdueled sophomore Kevin Gowdy in Dos Pueblos’ 1-0 win over Santa Barbara. Tedeschi struck out 12 and walked one while allowing three hits. Gowdy struck out five and walked one while allowing five hits.

In the Pioneer League, El Segundo defeated Compton Cetennial, 10-1. Jake Palmer had two RBIs and Hunter Lewis allowed one hit in five innings.

In the Suburban League, Victor Sanchez threw a shutout in John Glenn’s 1-0 win over La Mirada. John Glenn is 13-2 and 5-0 in league.

In the Pacific League, Arcadia defeated Burroughs, 4-2. Crescenta Valley defeated Muir, 10-0. Tanner Carrico and Joe Torres combined on a two-hitter. Bryan Wang had three hits.

Alex Garcia of Bishop Amat turned in a top pitching performance, striking out 15 and allowing three hits in a 4-1 victory over Gardena Serra. Adryan Ramirez had three hits and Christian Moya had a triple and two RBIs.

In the Dennis Gilbert tournament, Hamilton improved to 3-0 with a 6-0 victory over South East.

Granada Hills lost to Pt. Loma, 8-3. El Camino Real was beaten by Rancho Buena Vista, 3-2. Jeremy Polon struck out 11 in six innings in defeat. Dylan Hirsch had three hits. Granada Hills Kennedy lost to Steele Cayon, 7-2. Birmingham lost to Santa Fe Christian, 2-1, and defeated San Diego San Marcos, 4-2. Andres Lira got the win. Ray Ruvalcaba had two hits.

Westlake defeated Channel Islands, 7-2. Brandon Cavanah went four for four with four RBIs and a home run. Tyler Flores had two doubles.

Warren defeated Chula Vista, 4-2, to improve to 11-1. Brandon Hernandez and Alan Trejo each had two hits.

Riverside North defeated Gahr, 6-4. Kristian Gonzalez had two hits, including a home run.

Campbell Hall was beaten by Viewpoint, 9-7. Andrew Croutch had a triple and home run and six RBIs for Campbell Hall.

In Las Vegas, Banning was beaten by Shadow Ridge, 2-0. Gino Brockway gave up runs in the first and seventh. Banning defeated Independence, 3-0. Ivan Martinez won his first varsity start. Earlier, Banning lost to Las Vegas, 3-2.

Chatsworth was beaten by Arbor View 8-5. Riley Conlan and Jake Ryan had home runs for the Chancellors.

Narbonne advanced to the championship game of the Rancho Cardova tournament with a 2-1 win over Rosemont. Daniel Rocha improved to 5-1 and also had two hits. Javier Garcia had the save.

Cleveland defeated Castle Park, 3-2.
