Football: Chuck Petersen won’t be back as coach at Orange Lutheran

Share

Orange Lutheran announced on Friday that Chuck Petersen, the football coach for five years, will not be back as coach in 2017.

Petersen, a former college assistant at Air Force, replaced Jim Kunau, who was let go in 2012 after 19 seasons and winning a Division 1 title in 2006. Kunau is now head coach at Rancho Christian, which won a Southern Section title this season.

Petersen used an option offense in his first four years, then switched to a successful spread offense this season. He remains highly regarded among high school coaches in Southern California.

With Petersen’s departure, every Trinity League school has replaced its football coach at least once since 2010 except Mater Dei.

The six schools pay their head coach very well and expectations are very high. JSerra is the other Trinity League school with an opening.

But anyone who thinks they’re going to beat Mater Dei or St. John Bosco in the next two years is fooling themselves. Both are loaded up with top young players.

There are more than 30 coach openings in Southern California and that number is expected to increase before Jan. 1.
