ROANOKE, Va.—
Rachel Dill of William Byrd walked into the Blue Hills Golf Club on Monday afternoon thinking she was there for a job interview in the pro shop. She walked out with a big check for $10,000.
Dill is this year's winner of the King Family Memorial Scholarship, given out at Blue Hills before the annual tournament.
Applicants must have an interest in golf and are judged on their academics and extra-curricular activities.
Dill is graduating in just three year's from Byrd as the school's valedictorian.
She's a captain on the soccer team, and will attend Virginia Tech next year with dreams of becoming a surgeon.
And she had quite the surprise this afternoon.
"I was walking up here and I thought I was going to get interviewed," Dill said. "He kept walking out the door and I was like 'Is he about to give a speech? Where is he going, do I just stay here?' Then I saw the check. I don't golf much so I didn't think I was going to get it. But I applied for it and I went to the interview and they were all very, very nice in the interview. And it worked out well I guess."
