Jayson Williams Arrested, Charged With DWI

Police say ex-NBA star Jason Williams suffered a minor bone fracture in his neck and cuts to his face when his SUV veered off an exit along the FDR early Tuesday in lower Manhattan, hitting a tree.

Williams was arrested and charged with DWI, officials confirmed to PIX News. Police sources say the ex-Net refused a breathalyzer test at the scene of the crash.

Authorities have also asked for a warrant to test blood taken by hospital officials for alcohol content.

Williams' black Mercedes-Benz crashed off the East 20th Street exit of the FDR at 3:15 a.m. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

Police say they found Williams in the passenger seat of his car and he had told them someone else had been driving. However witnesses have told police no one else was in the car at the time of the crash and Williams was in the driver's seat.

Williams retired from the New Jersey Nets in 2000. He faces a retrial regarding his reckless manslaughter charging stemming from a fatal 2002 shooting in his home. His case first ended with a deadlocked jury in 2004. Witnesses testified in that case that Williams had been drinking when the shotgun he was showing off in his bedroom went off killing hired driver Costas Christofi.
