PHILADELPHIA, PA (WPIX)—The Rangers were eliminated from playoff contention Sunday in their last game of the season, losing to the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 in a shootout.
The Rangers and Flyers entered the game each needing to win to clinch a spot in the post-season.
Philadelphia's Danny Briere and Claude Giroux scored for the Flyers in the shootout while P.A. Parentau scored for the Rangers.
New York's Olli Jokinen could have extended the shootout with a goal against the Flyers' Brian Boucher, instead his low backhand was stopped by the Philadelphia goaltender.
The Rangers openend the scoring 3:27 into the first period when Jody Shelley netted his second goal of the season.
The Flyers' Matt Carle tied the game at the 13:06 mark of the third period with a rebound goal while on the power play. The teams went to overtime tied at one.
The win clinches the 7th spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs for the Flyers.
The Rangers will miss the playoffs for the first time in four seasons.
