TIPTON Hamilton Heights closed out the 2010 calendar year with a 66-61 victory over Tipton in the grueling 16-team Bob Wettig Tournament. Friday night, however, the Blue Devils erased any remaining memories of that defeat, bouncing the Huskies 69-57 in front of a packed house at Tipton High School.
It took a little while for both Tipton (13-2) and Hamilton Heights (14-3) to find their bearings offensively, which resulted in several ties and lead changes, and each team being within a few baskets of each other for most of the 1st half. The Blue Devils eventually pushed their way to a 32-25 lead at halftime.
As the 3rd quarter began, Hamilton Heights made a quick charge behind two consecutive baskets from Alex Etherington, bringing the Huskies to within three at 32-29. From there Tipton's offense took control, extending the lead back to seven after three quarters, and eventually the final 12-point differential thanks to connecting on 19-of-22 free throw attempts in the final frame.
Tipton, ranked 5th in Class 2A, was led by sophomore Mike Crawford's 25 points. Greg dickey and Connor Rich both finished with a respectable 16 points. The Blue Devils will be back in action again Saturday when they host Eastern (Greentown).
The Etherington brothers, Austin and Alex, paced Hamilton Heights with 16 points apiece. Seth Small chipped in with 14 points. The Huskies won't hit the court again until next Friday when they travel to Maconaquah.
