Kellam gymnasts dominate regional meet
No Peninsula District gymnasts placed in the top eight of any event at Saturday's Eastern Region meet at Green Run High -- not too surprising, given South Hampton Roads' historical dominance.
Warwick's Melissa Wilson posted a 33.65 all-around score, the best among Peninsula competitors. Menchville's Sara Holm followed with a 33.475. The Peninsula won't be represented at the state meet.
Kellam's Kirsten Strausbaugh won the all-around title with a 39.125, followed by Princess Anne's Jennifer Ware at 39.075 and Kellam's Katie Barton at 38.3. Strausbaugh won the floor exercise (9.9), Ware the vault (9.85), Barton the uneven parallel bars (9.85) and Kellam's Katie Simpson the balance beam (9.8).
Holm's scores included 8.85 on the beam, 8.45 in the floor exercise and 8.975 in the vault. Wilson scored 8.325 on the bars.
Amanda Walker of Menchville, who won in all four disciplines at the Peninsula District meet, did not compete in the regional because of a prior commitment. Partly as a result, the district champion Monarchs were not involved in the team competition. Warwick was fifth at 101.2, Gloucester sixth (last) at 84.275.
Kellam took the crown at 152.475, with Hickory second at 149.775. Then came Great Bridge at 148.45 and Princess Anne at 147.425.
