Do you hate needles? How about watching your child receive their first vaccines? New research out of Georgia Tech and Emory University reveal a new way to administer vaccines that could be completely pain free. Share|The revolutionary microneedle patch delivery system uses a hundred microscopic needles that attach to the skin and dissolve into the bodily-fluids. After it has been dissolved only the water soluble backing is left over, which can be thrown away.
The patch was tested on mice and through the research they found that those mice who were vaccinated using the microneedle patch responded as well, if not better, than traditional needle vaccinations. The improved response may be due to the location of the administration of the vaccine. Richard Compans, professor of microbiology and immunology at Emory University School of Medicine: "The skin is a particularly attractive site for immunization because it contains an abundance of the types of cells that are important in generating immune responses to vaccines."
On top of providing a pain free way to receive vaccinations, the microneedle patch will also reduce waste by conventional needles.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
