TO DROOL FOR
They include Barneys New York, H&M, J.Crew, Kitson Kids, Life Size at Fred Segal, Lisa Kline Kids, Little Seed, Poppy, Pumpkinheads and Zara.
Barneys New York
The L.A. outpost of this high-fashion emporium stocks the company’s private label infant clothing line, featuring classic baby looks such as footie pajamas with baby blue or pink stripes ($36) and a snow-white ribbed cotton sweater-and-hat set ($68). The children’s department also features less dressy – but not much cheaper – fare, including Levi’s Capital E jeans ($148), Vilebrequin swim trunks ($95) and cashmere hoodies by Amber Hagan ($180). 9570 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, (310) 276-4400.
H&M
This fast-fashion chain is a family affair, boasting super-sized kids’ departments stocked with shrunken-down looks for infants through tweens at most of its SoCal locations. Prices are already stellar (not much is over $25), but shop the sale rack, and you’ll get über-trendy looks at Wal-Mart prices. Recent sale items include a pink babydoll dress festooned with red hearts ($5), madras shorts ($12.90), retro ’80s tiered skirts ($9.90) and Spicoli-style neon printed board shorts ($12.90 to $16.90). At the Beverly Center, 8500 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, (310) 855-1009, and the Americana at Brand, 891 Americana Way, Glendale, (818) 502-9835.
J.Crew
Crewcuts is this store’s “mini-me” line, and it’s full of quirky little pieces that resemble the grown-up collection. Metallic stripe linen jackets ($198), sequin cardigans ($168) and posy pouf swing skirts ($328) are perfect for baby Carrie Bradshaws, while rumpled linen button-downs ($32.50), Italian chino sport coats ($148) and patchwork madras bow ties ($19.50) will have the little guys looking like wee Ivy league professors. Crewcuts sizes range from ages 2 to 10. Available at J. Crew stores at Americana at Brand, 857 Americana Way, Glendale, (818) 244-4975, 3 W. Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena, (626) 568.2739, and online at www.jcrew.com.
Kitson Kids
Kitson owner Fraser Ross doesn’t mess around with obscure brands – even in his kids’ boutique. All the big sportswear brands are smushed into this Robertson Boulevard storefront, from True Religion and Joe’s Jeans denim ($80 to $165) to Kid La Rok and C&C dresses ($58). There’s also a good selection of Little Marc (Jacobs) pieces, including JFK-esque windbreakers for boys ($88) and ladylike cardigans for girls ($105 to $128). 108 S. Robertson Blvd., Los Angeles, (310) 246-3829.
Life Size at Fred Segal
This one-stop kiddo shop features a wide selection of L.A.-based mini-me lines, including Juicy Couture Baby and Kids, Ella Moss, 7 for All Mankind and James Perse. It’s also heavy on accessories, including Tiny Toms shoes in pink camouflage ($32), Uggs boots ($130) and cheetah-print receiving blankets from Swaddle Designs ($30). 500 Broadway, Santa Monica, (310) 458-1160.
Lisa Kline Kids
Kline’s children’s outpost corrals shrunken-down looks from big-name brands such as Calypso Enfant and C&C with pieces from more obscure (and often cheaper) labels such as Altru, which makes ironic T-shirts emblazoned with retro USA slogans ($35), and Bees & Dragons, creator of a whimsical Western-inspired footsie pajama with a horseshoe graphic on the bottom of each foot ($51). 123 S. Robertson Blvd., Los Angeles,(310) 247-0488.
Little Seed
This new boutique in Larchmont Village, owned by Paige Goldberg Tolmach and Soleil Moon Frye (the actress who played “Punky Brewster” on the ’80s TV series), specializes in “eco-friendly,” nontoxic clothes and merch for infants and toddlers – from brands including Fauna and Under the Nile. Following the boutique’s mantra, “Tree Hugging With Style,” clothes are 100% organic and 110% adorable (check out the unconventional colors and silhouettes), not to mention affordable. What new mom doesn’t need a tomato-hued baby sack with a preppy white collar from Kate Quinn Organics ($32) or PJs that resemble a tiny ninja suit from Sage Creek ($40)? 219 N. Larchmont Blvd., Los Angeles, (323) 462-4441.
Phillip Lim
The only place in L.A. to get Phillip Lim’s new girl’s collection is at the designer’s new flagship store in West Hollywood. Priced from $55 for simple cotton tops to $325 for structural, ladylike coats, the line is an almost exact reproduction of Lim’s adult ready-to-wear collection, full of the dressmaker details that have made him a fashion phenom. 631 N. Robertson Blvd., West Hollywood, (310) 358-1988.
Poppy
This airy store – a favorite among celebrity moms including Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Garner – stocks a mix of dressy and playtime looks for baby and kid from brands such as Barbour (outerwear), Lucy Sykes (frilly frocks) and Flora and Henri (fashion-forward dresses and separates). The store recently picked up L.A. designer Cynthia Vincent’s über-cool new baby line, which for spring is full of cute dresses made from the same electro-tribal prints she used in her ready-to-wear collection ($138). 225 26th St., Santa Monica, (310) 260-4777.
Pumpkinheads
When Dustin Hoffman, Robert Downey Jr. and Adam Sandler need baby clothes, they pop into this high-end Brentwood boutique, which carries international mini-me brands, including Miss Sixty, Energie and Diesel ($223 will buy you a white Sonia Rykiel sundress for your 1-year-old), along with the usual sportswear suspects – True Religion, Splendid Littles and Tweens and Small Paul (Frank). Super-soft, basic T-shirts from the store’s private label, Daily Threads, are also a hit ($15 to $19). 11640 San Vicente Blvd., Los Angeles, (310) 207-6760.
Zara
The Spanish fast-fashion giant famous for channeling the runways in its women’s collections is doing just as well by kids. The girls’ department is stocked with miniature versions of just about every summer trend: watercolor floral prints, ’70s-style short shorts, paisley granny dresses, canvas fanny packs, sweet button-front blouses, pyramid-studded neon belts. And, oh, the shoes: metallic ballet flats, gladiator sandals, cork wedgies – even a pair of studded flats that are a ringer for Marc Jacobs’. The boys’ department is less fashion plate but plenty cool with madras shorts, embossed leather flip-flops and denim messenger bags. Sizes are for kids 2 to 14 years old; most prices are under $30. 1338 Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica, (310) 458-0892, and other locations.
