Financial literacy for kids

October 6, 2008

Adults make plenty of mistakes with their money. Themint.org wants to keep teenagers from doing the same.

The financial literacy website, produced by the Northwestern Mutual Foundation and the National Council on Economic Education, aims to help teens learn how to earn, save, budget and invest money.

The youth-friendly site is filled with colorful graphics, polls and playful quizzes such as "When will you be a millionaire?" Pithy articles address the pros and cons of credit cards, what to expect in a starting salary and the risks and rewards of various investments.

A section for parents offers tips on such things as giving an allowance and using everyday experiences to help kids understand money.

For teachers, Themint.org outlines lessons for creating a sample budget and learning about the stock market.
