Transformer malfunction delays three LAX flights

Electrical service to the remote west end of the airfield is knocked out. The cause of the problem is under investigation.

A transformer malfunctioned near Los Angeles International Airport today, interrupting some electrical service on one end of the airfield and affecting three departing flights, authorities said.

Firefighters were sent to 7300 World Way West shortly before 11 a.m. and quickly extinguished a trash fire that was sparked by the transformer, said d’Lisa Davies, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. The cause of the problem was under investigation.

The transformer problem knocked out electricity to the remote west end of the airfield, affecting some outside aircraft gates and construction trailers, according to a statement released by LAX officials.

Three flights were expected to be delayed, because the passenger boarding walkways became inoperable, officials said. They were: All Nippon Airlines Flight 5 to Tokyo, which was set to depart at 12:55 p.m. with 218 passengers; LAN Chile Airlines Flight 601 to Santiago, set to depart at 1:20 p.m. with 224 passengers; and China Eastern Airlines Flight 586 to Shanghai, set to depart at 1:30 p.m.

Crews were working to restore power, said LAX spokesman Albert Rodriguez.
