DJ drops beats with a side of Kung Fu

DJ Laidback Luke (aka Lucas van Scheppingen) will soon be in San Diego to help celebrate LED’s Sixth Anniversary party at Valley View Casino Center. He’s even sticking around to close the night with a bonus set at Bang Bang.

In addition to performing, the Dutch producer has run Mixmash Records since 2004. He scored a breakthrough hit partnering with Steve Aoki and Lil Jon on 2011’s “Turbulence,” and has worked with Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta, Kaskade, and Avicii (to name a few). His most recent full-length, 2015’s “Focus,” featured collaborations with Yellow Claw and Benny Benassi.

The new Laidback Luke single, a track co-produced with Ralvero called “XOXO (feat. Ina),” comes out on Feb. 20. But for those who just can’t wait, a minute-long preview is currently on the DJ’s Soundcloud page.

Although van Scheppingen has at least a dozen dates booked across the globe through July, the producer is taking a mid-March break for some Kung Fu.

That’s right. Kung Fu. When it comes to martial arts, van Scheppingen is anything but laid back.

For those that have followed his career, this should come as no surprise. At the 2013 Kung Fu World Championships in China, van Scheppingen won five medals. He took home the silver in Animal Form and four golds in the categories of Two Man Kung Fu Set, Staff Form, Broadsword Form, and Hand Form.

And he’s going back for more.

At this year’s World Championships in Hong Kong, the multi-talented DJ will compete as part of the Hong Ying International Pro-Team in six different categories of both Tai Chi and Kung Fu including Straight-Sword, Fan, and Bo-Staff.

With more than 10,000 international competitors taking part in the event, it remains to be seen if van Scheppingen will be able to match his medal haul from four years ago.

But he’s sure to be the only participant that is just as good dropping beats as he is in dropping a perfectly executed tiger claw.
