Eddie Vedder, Lana Del Rey set for debut OHANA festival

The already competitive Southern California music festival scene could heat up this summer in a big way with the debut of the Ohana Music Festival.

To be held Aug. 27 and 28 at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, the all-ages Ohana has already nailed down some formidable headliners, including Pearl Jam singer (and former San Diegan) Eddie Vedder, Elvis Costello (who performs a sold-out show Thursday at San Diego’s Balboa Theatre), Lana Del Rey, Cat Power, Band of Horses and City and Colour. Coming in between Coachella, which takes places April 15-17 and 22-24, and the second edition of KAABOO Del Mar, which will be held Sept. 16-18 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds (just 45 miles away from Dana Point), Ohana seems poised to go head-to-head for at least some of the same music fans. Daily attendance will be limited to 12,000.

The new festival was announced Monday morning. It will be held at the same Dana point beach that hosts the annual Doheny Blues Festival. Ohana is being co-produced by Live Nation, which owns Sleep Train Amphitheatre in Chula Vista and the House of Blues nightclub in downtown San Diego, and Syngery Global Entertainment, which produces at least two-dozen annual festivals, including the Rockstar Mayhem Festival and the Rockstar Uproar Festival.

“Opportunities to create something so pure and special with people that you have immense respect for don’t come along often - Ohana is that creation,” said Live Nation’s President of Booking Los Angeles, Rich Best, in a statement Monday.

“Ohana brings together a very unique collection of music and culture in a setting that could not be any more beautiful. It’s something very different than anything happening in today’s festivals. It’s family. Ohana.”

Ohana will donate a portion of its proceeds to the San Onofre Parks Foundation, a California non-profit that works with California State Parks to develop, preserve and enhance the California’s coastal parks.

The festival will offer attendees craft beer, wine, and signature cocktails, along with artisan food options from local restaurants and food trucks.

Tickets are priced at $99.50 per day, plus service charges, and $199 for two-day tickets, plus service charges.

A limited number of VIP passes are available and cost $499 per day, plus service charges. The VIP passes include “festival entry, VIP Lounge admission with expedited festival entry, a VIP laminate, an Ohana partnership swag bag, access to the Ohana VIP Lounge, inclusive of a hosted cocktail bar and complimentary hors d’oeuvres (while supplies last), a live stream of the music stage, comfortable lounge seating with shaded areas, cabanas to hang out and relax in, private restrooms, a dedicated cash bar and access to the exclusive Ohana photo booth. Attendees must be 21+ to get into the VIP Lounge.”
