Jason Mraz to perform San Diego solo acoustic concert

Jason Mraz has just one concert scheduled so far this fall - and it’s almost in his backyard, at least figuratively speaking.

The two-time Grammy Award-winning troubadour lives in Oceanside, just 38 miles north of downtown San Diego’s Spreckels Theater, where he will perform a solo acoustic show on Oct. 14. (Ticket information appears below.)

Mraz, who turned 40 on June 23, is billing his intimate concert at the 1,463-capacity Spreckels as the punctuation-free “Music Candor Banter.”

It will, according to a Monday morning announcement, feature Mraz “performing and reinterpreting selections from his extensive catalog while sharing stories and surprising revelations from his career.”

Or, as he put it in statement about the show: “Performing is both a joy and a challenge. San Diego has been very receptive and kind to my unrated experimentation and evolution.”

Mraz also announced his Spreckels concert in a Monday morning post on his website: “Howdy Friends! And welcome to this first of many exciting upcoming announcements. Join me and my guitar in San Diego on Saturday, October 14 for a weird and perhaps wild night of music, comedic candor, and banter. Aptly titled Music. Candor. Banter.”

He is, of course, no stranger to the Spreckels, which opened in 1912 and has hosted concerts by everyone from John Prine, Phish and Eddie Vedder to the Neville Brothers, Jack Johnson and Metallica.

Mraz filmed part of the music video for his 2002 hit song “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry)” at the historic theater. It wasn’t his only visit - he most recently performed a pair of concerts there in late 2011, accompanied by veteran percussionist Noel “Toca” Rivera.

His Oct. 14 concert will be the first here by Mraz since he announced that, effective Sept. 1, he was parting ways after 18 years with his longtime manager, Bill Silva, in order to oversee his own career.

Tickets for Mraz’s Oct. 14 Spreckels concert are priced at are $59.50 to $79.50, plus service charges. They go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. at Ticketmaster and will be available online at ticketmaster.com and by phone at 800.745.3000.
