Jay-Z announces 4:44 concert tour
Jay-Z may still have 99 problems, as he famously rapped in his 2004 hit, but a buzz-worthy new tour isn’t one of them.
The hip-hop superstar and husband of Beyoncé will kick off his 4:44 concert tour Oct. 27 at the Honda Center in Anaheim. It will conclude with four more California shows in December, including a Dec. 19 date at San Diego State University’s Viejas Arena.
The other California stops are Dec. 17 at Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center and Dec. 21 at The Forum in Los Angeles. All of the tour dates and cities appear below, as does pre-sale and general on-sale ticket information.
Jay-Z’s real name is Shawn Carter. The 4:44 tour will be his first headlining concert trek since his Magna Carter tour included a stop at San Diego’s Valley View Casino Center in late 2013. He and Beyoncé embarked on their joint On The Run stadium tour in the summer of 2014, but it skipped San Diego.
The upcoming tour takes its name from Jay-Z’s 13th and newest studio album, “4:44.” It was released online on June 30 - for its first week only to subscribers of Tidal, the three-year-old music and video streaming service Jay-Z co-owns.
“4:44” was released in physical CD form on July 7, when it also became available on iTunes and Apple Music. At last glance, “4:44” had topped the iTunes sales charts in no fewer than 39 countries around the world.
Jay-Z pointedly has not made his latest album available on Spotify, a competing streaming service that has been accused of not fairly compensating the artists and songwriters whose music it streams. Spotify has denied those charges.
Jay-Z paid $56 million to acquire Tidal in 2015 from its Norway-based creators. An artist-owned company, Tidal’s other investors now include Beyoncé, Madonna, Kayne West, Rihanna, Calvin Harris and Jason Aldean.
In January, Sprint paid $200 million to acquire a 33 percent share in Tidal. On July 2, for a limited time, fans around the world could download “4:44” for free by going to a designated Tidal URL and then entering the voucher code “SPRINT,” as well as their email address, to get a download link.
It is unclear whether this was a savvy marketing move to generate more attention for Jay-Z’s new album, or a move to grow the customer base for Tidal, which last year reported having 3 million subscribers. However, that number could be inflated by up to 50 percent or more, according to a recent Forbes magazine article.
Regardless, Tidal subscribers will be among those to have first crack at buying tickets for Jay-Z’s “4:44” tour, with an exclusive on-sale that begins today, Monday, at 9 a.m., PST, at tidal.com.
A pre-sale for Citi card members will also begin today at 9 a.m., PST, and run through 7 p.m. Thursday.
Tickets for the general public go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. local time at livenation.com for most of the concerts on Jay-Z’s tour.
Tickets for his Dec. 19 San Diego concert will go on sale via ticketmaster.com, and by phone at (800) 745-3000, and are priced at $45-$175 each, plus service charges.
VIP Packages will be available at VIPNation.com.
