Justin Bieber announces 2016 ‘Purpose’ world tour
With his days of egg-pelting his neighbors, driving too fast and European monkey abandonment apparently behind him, Justin Bieber is ready to launch his first major North American tour since 2013.
The Canadian teen-pop vocal star will kick off his 2016 “Purpose” tour March 9 in Seattle. The tour, which concludes July 18 in New York City, will include six California concerts, including a March 29 date at San Diego’s Valley View Casino Center (formerly the San Diego Sports Arena). Bieber’s last area appearance was in 2013 at the same venue and was reviewed by the San Diego Union-Tribune, which praised his improved drumming skills.
All of the tour dates appear below, along with the ticket prices and on-sale date for his San Diego show and other stops on the tour.
Bieber announced his 2016 concert trek during the Wednesday morning telecast of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “Ellen.” The tour is timed to promote his new album, “Purpose,” which will be released Friday.
However, in an unusual promotion, from Thursday through Nov. 19, Lyft users will be able to buy the album for $5 by “sliding into Bieber mode.” But first, they have to take a $5 ride with Lyft (one of Uber’s biggest competitors). Upon the completion of the ride, they’ll get a link for a “Purpose” download and a $5 credit for their next ride.
Considering that Lyft requires passengers to be at least 18 to ride in a a Lyft vehicle on their own, and given that many Bieber fans have yet to complete high school, it remains to be seen how successful this promotion will be in boosting sales of his new album.
It also remains to be seen if Bieber will be less temperamental than at his Oct. 29 show in Oslo, Norway, where he abruptly ended his performance after one song, after concertgoers apparently got in his way when he tried to wipe up a liquid on the stage. Bieber later wrote on Instagram, that he “chose to end the show as the people in the front row would not listen.”
Those people also grabbed a towel Bieber was using to mop up an unidentified liquid on the stage, a move that raised his ire.
“Hey, wait! What are you doing? Yo, yo, yo! What are you doing? Come on! I said stop it. Yo, what are you doing? Guys! Yo, listen to me! Are you listening? OK! I’m trying to wipe the floor. Give me a second, yo,” Bieber told the Oslo audience. “Guys, never mind. I’m done. I’m not doing the show. I’m not doing the show.”
Tickets for Bieber’s hopefully liquid-free stage March 29 San Diego concert are priced at $50.59 to $116 each, plus service charges. Tickets go on sale Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. online at the Vallew View Casino Center box office, online at axs.com, by phone at (855) 411-4849. A pre-sale for American Express card members begins at noon Monday and runs through 10 p.m. Nov. 19.
As of this writing, Bieber’s San Diego concert is not yet listed on the Valley View Casino Center website, nor does it appear on the axs.com website, which lists the other shows on his tour. However, his San Diego date was confirmed to the Union-Tribune by AEG/Goldenvoice, which owns a controlling interest in Vallew View Casino Center.
