KAABOO Del Mar announces full 2016 lineup
On the heels of a recent deal that will keep KAABOO Del Mar at the Del Mar Racetrack and Fairgrounds for the next decade (five years with up to five additional one-year extensions), festival organizers have released the full lineup for their three-day event Sept. 16-18.
And it’s a doozy.
Delivering on the promise to expand upon last year’s roster, KAABOO Del Mar 2016 did it across the board.
Legendary rockers Aerosmith, who last played San Diego for a Cisco private event last year at Petco Park, will join Jack Johnson and Jimmy Buffett as headliners of KAABOO’s second installment.
Recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Daryl Hall and John Oates, Chicago pop-punkers Fall Out Boy, and everyone’s favorite pants-splitter Lenny Kravitz will back up the big guns. One Republic, Capital Cities, and GROUPLOVE also will play.
And from there is where things really get interesting.
Fresh from Coachella this year, DJ duo The Chainsmokers and Norwegian DJ Matoma will keep the late-night beats going, while house superstar/Dim Mak boss Steve Aoki and Grammy-nominated Portuguese DJ RAC will also be on hand to give electronic music fans some options.
Hip-hop, which was represented by Snoop Dogg and The Roots last year, will come in the form of Flo Rida, Ludacris, and Cypress Hill.
Veteran UK reggae act Steel Pulse is on the bill, as is surf rocker Donavon Frankenreiter, and Alabama soul outfit St. Paul & The Broken Bones.
A pair of San Diego legends in Steve Poltz and Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe will make appearances, and it’s going to be a nonstop ‘90s dance party with Collective Soul, Goo Goo Dolls, Sugar Ray, Gin Blossoms, and Blues Traveler all playing within 72 hours of each other.
Excellent lesser-known acts are playing as well, with appearances from South Carolina alt-country duo Shovels & Rope and Colombia’s electro-cumbia act Bomba Estéreo. (A full list of performers is at the end of the story.)
KAABOO Del Mar’s comedy offerings, which were announced last month, hold their own with an all-star lineup that includes David Cross, Janeane Garofalo, Dana Carvey, Darrell Hammond, the cast of HBO’s “Silicon Valley” and a bunch more.
There are minor stage changes - the Grand View Stage will move to the infield, and Palate Stage will now live outdoors for a “combination of culinary programming and music” - but everything else from last year’s KAABOO is returning: Art exhibitions, craft food and libations, and a selection of additional amenities. And, of course, there’s always the sunset on the ocean. How many days until Sept. 16?
