Nicki Minaj announces summer concert tour

Hip-hop star and former “American Idol” judge Nicki Minaj will hit the road this summer for a North American tour that begins July 17 in Dallas and concludes Aug. 19 with a Canadian date in Edmonton. Her itinerary will include an Aug. 13 date at Sleep Train Amphitheatre in Chula Vista. (All of her tour dates appear below.)

The tour in in support of Minaj’s third album, “The Pinkprint,” which came out late last year. Supports acts for her tour include Meek Mill, Rae Sremmurd, Tinashe and Dej Loaf. Tinahse had been scheduled to be a part of Iggy Azalea’s spring tour, which was to have include a San Diego stop at Valley View Casino Center, but that tour was postponed until the fall.

A pre-sale for Minaj fan club members and for VIP ticket packages begins Wednesday at 10 a.m. The general on-sale date is 10 a.m. Saturday, including for her Aug. 13 Sleep Train Amphitheatre date. Depending on the venue, tickets will go on sale at that time at livenation.com or ticketmaster.com, and by phone at (800) 745-3000.

As of this writing, only a few of her tour dates are posted on the websites for Ticketmaster and Live Nation, but all of them appear on Minaj’’s website. Tickets for her San Diego show have not yet been announced, but they range from $25 to $85 each, and from $25 to $99.50, plus service charges, for some other dates on her tour.

George Varga

San Diego Union-Tribune music critic George Varga began drumming in rock bands at 12 and writing professionally about music at 15. A Louisiana native who grew up mostly in Germany, Varga has earned three Pulitzer Prize nominations for his writing at the U-T and is a voting member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In addition to providing live coverage of the Grammy Awards and festivals from Coachella and KAABOO to the 1994 edition of Woodstock, he has interviewed everyone from Miles Davis, Britney Spears and (over a game of chess) Ray Charles to Willie Nelson, Kanye West and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Anthony Davis. A triple first prize-winner for criticism and arts writing at the 2022 and 2023 San Diego Press Club awards and a double first prize-winner at the 2022 and 2023 San Diego Society of Professional Journalists awards, Varga is also a contributing writer for Jazz Times magazine and has written for Billboard, Spin and other publications. After attending San Diego City College and San Diego State University, he created and taught the 2002 UC San Diego Extension course, “Jazz in a Post-Ken-Burns World.” Varga has written liner notes for more than a dozen albums, including by jazz sax greats James Moody and Michael Brecker, and contributed two chapters to the book, “Dylan: Disc By Disc.”
