8 hottest games you can’t miss at Comic-Con

We stopped by the Nintendo gaming lounge at the Marriott Marquis & Marina, Xbox gaming lounge at the Manchester Grand Hyatt and the Nerd HQ at The New Children’s Museum to check out some of the most popular games in the video game industry. Here are eight of the biggest games you cannot afford to miss at Comic-Con.

1 Fable Legends

This marks the seventh “Fable” in the franchise for Lionhead Studios. The player is equipped with either a hero or villain in a world named “Albion,” which harkens back to older themes of past “Fable” games. One of the bigger games on the show floor, “Fable Legends” will be offering a new experience for its fans. “In ‘Fable Legends,’ the experience we’re giving you is something completely different. So (the villain) is looking at the world from a top-down perspective, he controls the villain’s actions, along with all of the creatures, traps and spells,” said David Eckelberry, game director. “While this is going on, there are four other heroes playing against him.” The action role-playing game is scheduled to be released Oct. 16 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One and will feature other modes like online cooperative mode.

2 Gears of War Ultimate Edition

“Gears of War” is back, this time with plenty of added content and refurbished graphics. The first-person shooter will include five additional chapters for the campaign mode that were not offered on the original version. There will be new multiplayer modes, including a “two versus two” mode that was designed by the “Gears of War” community. The Xbox One exclusive will be released Aug. 25.

3 Guitar Hero Live

It has been almost five years since Activision has released one of its widely known “Guitar Hero” games. “Guitar Hero Live,” however, will feature new content to enhance the player’s experience. For starters, the guitar has six buttons located towards the top of the fret bar and the background crowd will be a product of live footage filmed from random concerts. This is different from past iterations of the game where the crowd as largely fake. “Guitar Hero Live” will be released for the Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One and mobile Oct. 20.

4 Mortal Kombat X

One of the most gruesome fighting games in the industry, “Mortal Kombat X” surely didn’t disappoint us at the Xbox gaming lounge. The 10th version of the “Mortal Kombat” franchise allows for fun downloadable content options with new characters like “Predator” from the “Alien” movies and “Jason” (“Friday the 13th”). Other additions include character costumes and single player challenges. “Mortal Kombat X” has been in stores since April 14 and is currently out for the Playstation 4, Playstation 3, Android, Xbox One, Xbox 360, iOS and Microsoft Windows.

5 Forza Motorsport 6

One of the prettiest racing games in the industry, “Forza Motorsport 6” offers some of the best graphics for the Xbox One. Like other games, this one will be using content seen in past “Forza” games. It will offer up to 24 players to play against during online or offline play along with 450 cars of different variations. “For us, ‘Forza’ is really an expression for our passion of cars. If you think about car culture in general, there’s lots of different ways people appreciate cars, and we reflect that in the game. So you can race in the rain here for the first time in ‘Forza’,” said Brian Ekberg, community manager. “You can also tune your cars, paint them, customize different parts and make them the way you want them to be. (You’re) Basically expressing what you love about cars in your own way.” Turn 10 Studios’s “Forza Motorsport 6” is slated to be released Sept. 15 as an Xbox One exclusive.

6 The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes

One of the hottest games announced at E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) in Los Angeles, “The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes” offers a unique experience for Nintendo 3 DS owners. Players will be able to be play cooperatively both online - and local - for the first time in the Zelda series. Of course, the game retains its notorious dungeons where players must use specific abilities to solve puzzles and defeat enemies. The hack and slash game has no official release date yet, but it is expected to hit store shelves in the Fall.

7 Splatoon

Nintendo fans have been rejoicing over “Splatoon,” an unconventional yet truly innovative first-person shooter. The quirky game features a cast known as “Inklings”, a cross between a squid and a human. The gameplay offers a creative atmosphere for players with online and offline modes. “It’s this action-shooter where the objective isn’t necessarily to splat your opponents, but instead you have to spray as much turf with ink as possible,” said Corey Olcsvary, from Nintendo Treehouse. “So you got these kind of chaotic matches where you have ink guns and rollers to do that in three minutes during a four-on-four player match.” The Wii U exclusive was released on May 28 and is one of our favorite Nintendo games on the show floor.

8 Star Wars Battlefront

It has been nearly 10 years since the release of “Star Wars: Battlefront II,” so naturally we were shocked when this game was announced at E3. Gamers will get to participate in up to 40 player matches along with characters from the Star Wars universe like Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader and Boba Fett - Electronic Arts have truly outdone themselves. Along with maps from different locations in the Star Wars universe like Hoth and Endor, players will be able to customize their gear, characters and different abilities that are unlocked throughout the game. “Star Wars Battlefront” will be released for Playstation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows Nov. 17.
