FAQ: What’s going on with MLB All-Star Week

Every summer, our staff inhales deeply and exhales loudly as we prep for the biggest event of the year: Comic-Con.

“The out-of-towners are coming!”

“Downtown will be a nightmare!”

“Where can we stalk the hottest celebs?”

All things I’ve definitely yelled while covering the event over the past three years, and, I’m realizing now, all the things I’ll be saying this weekend as the MLB All-Star Week rolls through.

With baseball’s very best coming to town, this means we’ll have two massive, make-the-rest-of-the-country-acknowledge-us events to embrace this summer. It also means packed streets, star spotting and playing nice with the tourists.

But, I digress. For those who are saying to themselves, “M-L-what?,” I’ve compiled a quick FAQ for you before you delve into this issue of DiscoverSD.

Q: What’s this MLB All-Star Week you speak of?

A: This is the 87th edition of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. The game is being hosted by the San Diego Padres and played at Petco Park, and it will be televised nationally on Fox. It takes over San Diego from July 7 through 12.

Q: I’m with you so far...

A: Excellent! You’re so smart. This is the third time that San Diego has hosted the All-Star Game. Fans were able to vote for the All-Star Game starters...

Q: But what about the celebrities?

A: Calm down, Perez Hilton. MLB All-Star Sunday includes the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game and the All-Star Legends & Celebrity Softball Game. Jamie Foxx heads the team, alongside Tim Foreman of Switchfoot, Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy, Kyle Mooney of SNL, Andy Cohen of Bravo fame, Terry Crews of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and some San Diego sports legends such as Trevor Hofmann and Ozzie Smith.

There’s also a series of concerts going down where guests can check out OneRepublic (July 8), Tori Kelly (July 9) and Gwen Stefani (July 9) at the Embarcadero Marina Park South.

Q: What about this FanFest?

A: MLB All-Star FanFest is basically a massive baseball theme park at the San Diego Convention Center on Friday, July 8 through Tuesday, July 12. Throughout the show floor, fans will have the chance to take photos and get autographs with former Padres players, MLB legends and Hall of Famers. You can read more about it here. FanFest tickets are $35 for adults and include all the attractions.

Q: What if I’m really, really not into baseball, but I still want to have some fun?

A: You’re in luck! You can partake in the pandemonium with the All-Star Yoga on July 9 or the All-Star 5K Color Run on July 10.
