Authorities have identified the 18-year-old Glendale man who was fatally struck Thursday while crossing the Foothill (210) Freeway in Pasadena as Arno Shakhmalian.

Shakhmalian was hit by a truck on the westbound 210 near the Arroyo Parkway at about 9:20 a.m. after his Lexus spun out and came to stop facing the wrong direction, according to California Highway Patrol officials.

For unknown reasons, Shakhmalian and his 18-year-old passenger -- identified by the CHP as Gabrielle Lavarro of La Crescenta -- exited the car and attempted to cross the freeway toward the center divider.

A 40-year-old San Bernardino man driving a Chevy truck at about 35 mph tried to swerve and avoid the pair, but hit Shakhmalian, officials said.

Shakhmalian died of his injuries at Huntington Memorial Hospital.

Lavarro was not injured, according to the CHP.

[For the Record 10:35 a.m.: An earlier version of this post incorrectly spelled Lavarro’s last name.]
