A hand grenade that was found in a red compact vehicle at a Toyota dealership in La Crescenta Wednesday night was determined to be inert, police said.

The World War II grenade was found by employees at Bob Smith Toyota on 3333 Foothill Blvd. around 4:50 p.m. as they were cleaning and servicing a car for resale, said Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz.

The dealership was evacuated and a Los Angeles County bomb squad was on the scene. Officials attempted to detonate the device a couple of times before learning that it was an inert device and filled with steel, Lorenz said.

“There is nothing devious here,” he said. “It looks like something that was left in the car and was forgotten about.”
