Burbank police collected 234 pounds of prescription drugs Saturday at a take-back event that was held in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration in an effort to curb pill abuse and drug theft, police said.

The haul is 76 more pounds than officials collected at the last take-back event in September — enough to fill 12 large boxes, said Burbank Police Officer Joshua Kendrick.

“It’s obviously encouraging that people are bringing their medications that are unused and no longer needed,” Kendrick said. “The most important part is to make sure we’re disposing of them correctly so they’re not being dumped in water ways, not being put in the trash, and definitely not being left at home for others to possibly get into.”

After residents turned in the medications, they were given to the DEA for proper disposal, Kendrick said.
