The pedestrian who was struck and killed on the Ventura (134) Freeway in Burbank early Tuesday was reportedly walking across the lanes when he was hit, California Highway Patrol Officer Francisco Villalobos said.

The pedestrian, described as an adult male, had just walked across the eastbound lanes of the freeway and was midway through the westbound side when he was struck by several cars, Villalobos said, citing witness reports.

Authorities were trying to determine why the man, whose identity was not immediately available, was walking across the freeway near Bob Hope Drive. There did not appear to be a disabled vehicle near the fatal accident, which was reported shortly before 5 a.m.

All westbound lanes were closed for 40 minutes, Villalobos said, before authorities were able to reopen the two left lanes until the scene was cleared at about 8:40 a.m.
