Bloomingdale’s announces plans to open store in Glendale Galleria

High-end department store Bloomingdale’s announced plans this morning to become an anchor tenant for the Glendale Galleria -- a major addition for the mega mall that has struggled to retain its shine against the sway of the Americana at Brand.

The Galleria would be Bloomingdale’s eighth department store in Southern California and fill a major void after Americana developer Rick Caruso announced plans earlier this year that he was poaching Nordstrom. Without a new tenant, the Galleria would have had two major anchor vacancies -- on Brand Boulevard where Mervyns once stood, and on Central Avenue.

The 120,000-square-foot Bloomingdale’s is projected to bring 175 jobs to the city when it opens in fall 2013, according to the announcement.

Bloomingdale’s Chief Executive Michael Gould said in a statement that the Glendale store would be “carefully edited for the community and customer.”

The Galleria will also undergo “an expansive renovation” inside and out.

The Galleria, constrained by the financial woes of its parent company, General Growth Properties, has struggled to update its aging property, but in a statement, Mayor Laura Friedman said the renovation would “further strengthen the city of Glendale’s retail core.”
