Black Friday: Shoppers converge on local retail destinations
Long lines that started forming at some of the area’s largest retailers overnight Thursday gave way to the more traditional Black Friday crowds in the morning, with shoppers clogging stores in Burbank and Glendale for those early bird deals.
In Burbank, police were deployed to Best Buy and Target overnight as the first few hundred customers were given wristbands for midnight access. Hundreds more customers, meanwhile, waited in lines that snaked around buildings and into parking lots.
At the region’s retail juggernaut, the Glendale Galleria, the early morning scene was brisk, but not overly crowded, and traffic remained fairly calm on city streets.
Police warned shoppers to take precautions against crime of opportunity, namely, vehicle break-ins, by keeping shopping bags out of plain sight in parked cars.
The public was also advised to use credit cards and checks – which can be canceled – rather than large sums of cash, and to keep wallets and purses close to the body. Children should also never be allowed to use public restrooms alone, police said.
