Verdugo pool project in Burbank enters heavy construction phase
After shoring up utilities and other infrastructure, heavy construction on the Verdugo Park community pool is in high gear, putting a long-awaited project on schedule, the official overseeing the work said.
On Monday morning, three sides of the patio deck had been removed and was scheduled to be completely gutted by Thursday, said City Engineer Sean Corrigan, who is overseeing the construction.
As the project enters its heavy construction phase, he said he did not anticipate the public would be affected. Utilities were isolated before major construction began so that the upstairs level of the recreation center could remain open to the public.
“Most of what we do should be pretty invisible to the public unless they step out onto the balcony,” which oversees the pool, Corrigan said.
A lot of the interior walls of the ground level bath house are now gone, he added.
Once underground demolition is completed, officials will have a good idea if there are any conditions that could not be seen during the design phase of the project, Corrigan said.
“Within a month we should have an answer if there are unforeseen circumstances we have to deal with,” Corrigan said. “There have been none so far.”
A new bath house with updated locker rooms, a new 50-meter pool and a second pool with a slide are part of the plan to update the aquatic center by April. The City Council this month is also scheduled to discuss the possibility of a longer swimming season.
