Burroughs boys’ basketball does in Burbank

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Burroughs 53, Burbank 44: The Indians came from behind in the fourth quarter to earn a Pacific League victory at Burbank.

It was the first win by Indians Coach Adam Hochberg against his cross-town rival in his three years at the school.

Despite the loss, Burbank (15-12, 7-7 in league) finishes fourth in league and earns the final automatic playoff berth. Burroughs (15-11, 5-9) will apply for an at-large berth.

“That’s what we were playing for — to try and improve our record and hopefully get into the playoffs,” Hochberg said. “I think that we should earn an at-large spot.

“I think we are the more talented team, but Burbank battled for the entire game. But I thought our length gave them problems tonight.”

Lawrence White paced Burroughs with 23 points. Sarkis Karium had 13 and Greg Salas added nine for Burbank.

The Bulldogs had problems in the first quarter, as they were outscored, 10-2. But Burbank came back in the second and trailed by just two at the break, 26-24.

The Indians were then outscored in the third, 14-9, as Burbank had a 38-35 lead heading into the final quarter.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

St. Anthony 77, Bellarmine-Jefferson 39: The Guards had a chance to grab a share of the Santa Cruz League championship with a win Thursday at home, but the Saints proved to be too tough.

It is the first time in six years the Guards (12-8, 6-2) have failed to win the league title.

Tiffany Kho and Anastasia Tsybaeva had 10 points each for Bell-Jeff.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Burroughs 1, Burbank 1: The Indians fell behind, but were able to salvage a Pacific League tie Thursday at Burbank.

Burroughs (13-6-3, 10-3-1) secured the league championship Tuesday.

Brandon Gerlach scored the equalizer in the second half for the Indians.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Burroughs 1, Burbank 0: Brianna Matallana scored the contest’s only goal with three minutes left in the match Thursday to lift the Indians to a Pacific League win at Memorial Field.

Burroughs (13-11-2, 10-3-1) finished third in league and Burbank (8-4-2) was fourth.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Burbank 16, Hoover 0: The Bulldogs easily won the consolation game in the Pacific League Tournament on Thursday at home and finished up at 4-4 in league.

Abby Glaessner led the way for Burbank with six goals. Seika Ha, Lala Herpetian, Ryan Bettencourt and Giuliana Vitagliano added two goals each.
