Providing sight and sound to needy
Burbank Noon Lions club offers two important programs for low-income individuals living in the city. Over the past year, eye exams and glasses with a market value of more than $2,600 have been provided to several qualifying Burbank residents. The second program is for free hearing aids, again for low-income individuals meeting the qualifications. Four individuals were referred to the California Lions Club “Hearing Foundation” to take advantage of this social service. With a market value of more than $6,000, Burbank Noon Lions Club is the only volunteer service organization offering and coordinating the free hearing aid service for Burbank residents.

Tax-deductible donations to help support these programs are gladly accepted, and information to donate can also be found on the website.
Lions Club members are not only involved in helping others to see and hear locally, but also sponsor the collection of used eyeglasses for those less fortunate living in underdeveloped countries. Many thousands of recycled eyeglasses have made their way to areas suffering major disasters including victims of the tsunami and earthquakes in Haiti and Chile.
Eyeglass collection boxes are located in all city libraries, at the Burbank Recycle Center, DonTuttle and Joslyn adult centers.
Burbank Noon Lions Club is open to men and women in the community wishing to contribute their volunteer service to help others. Club meetings are at noon the second and fourth Thursday of the month at the Holiday Inn, 150 E. Angeleno Ave., Burbank. BURBANK CIVITAN CLUB WINS FIRST PLACE
The Burbank Civitan Club received the first place award, out of 29 teams, at the Friends of the Burbank Public Library’s 2010 Trivia Challenge. Burbank Civitan team members were David Escobar, Randy Garcia and Jennifer Jordan. More than 150 persons attended the annual event at the Castaway Restaurant, with Jack O’Neill serving as master of ceremonies.
The club hosted the Tyro Dinner/Dance on June 11 at McCambridge Recreation Center for the clients of BCR “a place to grow.”
The 53rd Burbank Civitan Club Baseball Jamboree was held on June 19 at George Izay Park. More than 900 Hap Minor League Ball players competed in many baseball skills. Trophies were presented by the Burbank Park, Recreation and Community Services Department and more than 1,000 hot dogs and punch were prepared and served to the young ball players by members of the Burbank and Foothill Civitan Clubs.
City officials and staff members of the Park, Recreation and Community Services Department helped to kick-off the event.
Burbank Civitan Club members who were there to serve the young ball players were Joan Newbro, DeeDee Ruhlow, Shari Epstein, President David Holland, Morey Goodstein, Elaine Paonessa, President-Elect Randy Garcia, and many members of the Foothill Civitan Club.
Members also assisted the Foothill Civitans when they hosted the Ponytail Softball League ball players.
