Organizations: Students win Noon Lion poster contest

Burbank Noon Lions recently recognized local level competition winners in the annual Lions Clubs International Peace Poster Contest during an awards presentation on Nov. 22 at the Burbank Central Library.

First-level winners are Tnick Trivimol, Jordan Middle School; Cameron Sauve, Luther Burbank Middle School; and Sylvia Touris, Boys & Girls Club.

Students receiving awards were selected by personnel from their respective schools.

“Vision of Peace” was the theme for the contest. Students participated from Jordan and Luther Burbank middle schools and the Boys & Girls Club of Burbank.

The peace poster contest was established by Lions Clubs International to promote the awareness of world peace internationally, among youth.

Burbank government officials, students, teachers, Lions and parents gathered for the awards presentation to honor the winners.

This is the 15th year the Burbank Noon Lions Club has sponsored the project. Winners of this competition have the opportunity to proceed to the next level. After all judging takes place around the world, there will be 23 merit winners (receiving $500) and one top winner, receiving $2,500 and a trip to the United Nations in New York City.

All Burbank student entries will be on display until January in the Burbank Central Library, 110 N. Glenoaks Blvd.

Holiday Inn donates food to Salvation Army

The Burbank Holiday Inn held a food drive among the executive staff, the employees and the residents of the hotel. Numerous boxes of can goods and nonperishable items were presented to Lt. Kari Rudd and Corps Assistant Carlos Figueroa, of the Salvation Army, Burbank Corps. Members of the executive staff of the hotel helping load the food were Erika Hoffman, Chris Havens, Lynn Yeretzian and Chris Bird.

Each holiday season, the Salvation Army provides a complete Christmas dinner for the entire family. A toy or clothing for each child is personally purchased through the taditional “Angel Tree Program” in the Burbank Town Center. This season there are 200 more families being helped in the Burbank area, and operational funds are lower that ever before. The Salvation Army in Burbank does not receive outside help from the army network, but has to cover its financial responsibilities and operation costs through donations from the community.

A $35 donation per box feeds a family of four, with most families needing two boxes per household. Scouts wrapping gifts for donations

Several Burbank residents who are members of Delphi Academy’s Troop 555 are once again wrapping gifts for shoppers from Dec. 13 to 24 at the Sport Chalet, 975 Foothill Bvd., La Cañada Flintridge. The schedule will be posted at Sport Chalet.

This is Boy Scout Troop 555’s ninth year helping the community and Sport Chalet, which offers the complimentary gift wrapping to Sport Chalet customers for a donation to Troop 555. The Scouts will wrap everything from the smallest gift to the largest items such as bicycles and ping pong tables.

The Scouts use the money from donations to help pay for their upcoming camping adventures and are especially motivated as they have planned a “Road Trip” for 2011 touring the Western states, which includes camping at the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone National Park. They will have dinner at the top of the Seattle Space Needle and on the way home, visit a cranberry farm in Oregon and explore the many sights in San Francisco.

Nominations accepted for legacy awards

Over the past several years, the YWCA of Glendale has honored Women of Heart & Excellence at the annual Legacy Luncheon. The purpose of this award is to recognize exceptional and dynamic women in the local communities, whose work and/or volunteer service are creating legacies of love, strength and leadership.

The event also helps raise money for the Domestic Violence Project and EncorePlus, which is a breast and cervical cancer screening program for low-income women. These two nationally recognized programs serve women and children not only in Glendale, but also in the surrounding communities.

Nominations are being accepted until Jan. 10. Recipients will be honored at the annual Legacy Luncheon on March 31 at the Castaway Restaurant in Burbank.
