Rep. Adam Schiff on Supreme Court decisions: ‘Love is love’

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) called Wednesday a “huge day for the cause of equality” after the U.S. Supreme Court issued a pair of rulings essentially affirming the rights of gay couples to marry.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that the federal Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, was unconstitutional because it denied equal rights and benefits to all married couples. The court also turned away the defenders of Proposition 8, essentially sending the case back to California, where state officials are likely to resume gay marriages.

In his statement, Schiff said the Supreme Court had struck a “momentous blow against discrimination and injustice.”

“Love is love, and the fight will not be over until equality under the law — including the right to marry the person you love — is the law of the land in every state in the nation,” Schiff said.

Just a day earlier, Schiff had met with the Burbank couple that joined with a lesbian couple in Northern California to challenge Proposition 8, bringing it all the way to the Supreme Court.

Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks) also issued a statement applauding the high court’s decisions.

“I believe that government should allow all consenting adults, regardless of sexual orientation, to enjoy the benefits of legally recognized marriage,” he said.
