The following are updates on local athletes at the collegiate level.

Charlie Hosea (Burroughs High, 2010) senior, Wingate University football: The former Pacific League Defensive Player of the Year for the Indians is playing his final collegiate season after a long journey that led him to Wingate, a private Division II school in North Carolina.

Hosea, a starting linebacker, played for the Bulldogs last season as a junior after redshirting the 2013 campaign. Prior to his arrival at Wingate, Hosea played at Los Angeles Pierce College and College of the Canyons.

The former All-Area selection is coming off a junior campaign in which he was sixth on Wingate’s tackle charts with his 60 stops. He recorded 13 tackles (six solo, seven assists) with two tackles for loss, one sack and one fumble recovery in a home victory over Catawba.

This season, Hosea is again a big contributor for the Bulldogs. In two games, Hosea is tied for fourth on the team in tackles with nine, just four from the top spot. He tallied six stops Sept. 5 in a game against Johnson C. Smith and had three on Saturday against Shaw.

Wingate has also been able to thrive, starting the season 2-0, outscoring its opponents, 44-16.

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday when they host Brevard.

Garrett Boulais (Burroughs High, 2015), freshman, University of California San Diego men’s cross-country: Only a few months from graduating and leading the Indians to a CIF Southern Section Division I championship and a fourth-place showing in state, the reigning Leader Male Athlete of the Year is already making his presence known at the collegiate level.

In the first meet of the season for the Tritons Sept. 5, Boulais was one of the team’s scoring runners. Taking part in the UC Irvine Invitational, Boulais was UC San Diego’s fifth runner, crossing the line in 26 minutes 33.18 seconds on the eight-kilometer course, good enough for 25th place.

In the meet, all five Tritons scorers finished within six places of each other, helping the team to a third-place finish. The Tritons took third place with 81 total points, behind host UC Irvine (31 points) and Long Beach State (35 points).

“They followed the plan well, focusing on staying together,” coach Nate Garcia told the university’s website. “With such a small pack time we are going to be able to shock a lot of teams this year.”

Broulais and UC San Diego will take part in the Aztec Invitational Friday at San Diego State.

Jocelyn Cervantes (Bellarmine-Jefferson, 2012) sophomore, Cal State Stanislaus women’s volleyball: The former All-CIF standout for the Guards is having another standout season and the Warriors are following suit.

Cal State Stanislaus is off to one of its best starts in program history. Heading into Tuesday’s home match against San Francisco State, the Warriors were 6-0 for their best start since 1999. In the six wins, the Warriors have been dominant, earning three sweeps and surrendering just three total games.

The team earned a 25-21, 18-25, 25-14, 25-20 victory Saturday on the road against Merced. The trio of Cervantes, Taylor Massengale and Blair Ehrlich combined for 38 of the 62 team kills on the night. Cervantes tallied 11 kills. The three Warriors also accounted for 29 of 44 kills in Friday’s win at Cal State Monterey Bay. Cervantes chipped in with 10 kills.

As a team, the Warriors recorded an attacking percentage of .338 on 62 kills and 151 attempts with just 11 errors for the season-best mark.

Cervantes, an outside hitter, recorded a season-best 15 kills Sept. 4 in a three-game win against Academy of Art University. She is currently third on the team in kills with 58 to go along with 71 digs, seven blocks and six aces.

Cal State Stanislaus will play at Cal State Los Angeles on Friday.
