BURBANK VS. HOOVER

WHEN: 7 p.m. Thursday.

WHERE: Memorial Field.

RECORDS: The Bulldogs are 1-2; the Tornadoes are 2-1.

LAST WEEK: Burbank lost to Inglewood in overtime, 21-14; Hoover lost to Temple City, 15-14.

OUTLOOK: The Burbank defense has played well for the most part in three nonleague games this season. In fact, the Bulldogs surrender an average of just 17.3 points a game, which is second-best among the eight teams in the Pacific League. Last week, defensive backs Joshua Nersissian and Sebastian Santoro picked off passes. The Bulldogs look to begin the league campaign against a Hoover squad that has enjoyed surprising success to begin the season. By starting off the campaign with two straight wins, the Tornadoes enjoyed thair best start in seven years before suffering a loss against Temple City. Hoover has a steady running back in senior Jesse Pena, who has five touchdowns. The Tornadoes have a solid quarterback in senior Brendon Kerr. As for the Burbank offense, it has enjoyed success on the ground and struggled when it has tried to pass the ball. In fact, in last week’s loss to Inglewood, the Bulldogs completed just two passes and also had two interceptions. Burbank has talented running backs in sophomore James Williams, junior Joseph Pendleton and seniors Teddy Arlington and Joe Argenziano. Williams tallied two touchdowns last week.

SOMETHING INTERESTING: Only two squads — Crescenta Valley and Hoover, both a 2-1 — of the eight-team Pacific League have winning records after the nonleague campaign.

BURROUGHS VS. ARCADIA

WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday.

WHERE: Memorial Field.

RECORDS: The Indians and the Apaches are both 0-3.

LAST WEEK: Burroughs lost to Camarillo, 50-13; Arcadia lost to Monrovia, 52-17.

OUTLOOK: Last year’s co-Pacific League champions come into their season opener after suffering through their share of woes during the nonleague campaign. At least there might be a silver lining for Burroughs. The previous two seasons, the Indians have gone 0-3 during nonleague play only to grab a share of the league crown. Burroughs has had problems with its offense in the three games, which also included losses to Paraclete and North Hollywood. Arcadia likes to pass the ball behind senior quarterback Zachary Lee. Lee has completed 29 of 66 passes for 470 yards and two touchdowns. He has also thrown four interceptions. The Apaches’ leading rusher is senior running back Jake Medel, who has just 75 yards. The team has almost an entirely new offensive line this season under first-year Coach Chris Long, who headed the Hoover program for two years ending in 2010. Burroughs has experimented with a few running backs so far this season. In last week’s loss, Joshua Storer and Garrett Manoukian scored touchdowns.

SOMETHING INTERESTING: Burroughs is averaging 12.3 points a game.
